In 1850 Jane A. Barnes (43, b. KY, farmer) was a head of household in Union, IN (Parke County) with James A. Barnes (20, b. IN, farmer) and Rosetta A. Barnes (15, b. IN).

In 1860 James A. Karns (31, b. IN, farmer) headed a Champaign County, IL household with Mary Karns (35, b. IN), Joseph Karns (1, b. IL). and Jane Karns (52, b. KY, domestic). The census copy was hard to read, but this seems to fit with his family situation at the time if his mother was in the house at the time of the census.

In 1870 Jas A. Barnes (40, b. IN, farmer) was a head of household in Dix, IL (Ford County) with Marilla J. Barnes (29, b. OH), Ellen F. Barnes (10, b. WI), Charles S. Barnes (3, b. IL), James H. Barnes (1, b. IL), Joseph J. Barnes (11, b. IL), John H. Barnes (9, b. IL), and Jane A. Barnes (62, b. KY).

In 1880 James Barnes (50, b. IN, farmer, both parents b. IN) was a head of household in Dix, IL (Ford County) with wife Morilla Barnes (40, b. OH, both parents b. OH), son Joseph Barnes (11, b. IL, farmer, father b. IN, mother b. OH), John Barnes (19, b. IL, farm laborer, mother b. OH), son Oliver Barnes (17, b. IL, farm laborer, mother b. OH), son Simon Barnes (13, b. IL, mother b. Oct 1826 in OH, married (for second time) 44 years, 3 children with 2 living, father b. PA, mother b. CT), and daughter Ellen Ashmore (49, b. WI, widowed, 9 children with 7 living, both parents b. OH). Ellen may have been adopted by James, as she was older than the tenure of the marriage of James and Marilla and Marilla is listed with a second marriage.

Wife Marilla's Findagrave memorial stated that husband James was struck and killed by the evening passenger train on 27 Aug 1910.
