Mr. Matthew Barnes, J.P., an old resident of the district, died on Tuesday from Bright's disease. He was an old councillor of the Gordon shire, and was connected for some years with irrigation trusts.

Matthew Barnes, of Boort, J.P., gentleman, by his will dated 15th August, 1893, and a codicil dated 11th April, 1895, appointed his wife Hannah Barnes, executrix, and his sons Mark Barnes and Matthew Barnes, executors. Testator bequeathed to his son Arthur Barnes a mourning ring as a token of his affection. Testator bequeathed all his furniture and effects in his dwelling house with the land on which it is built to his wife Margaret Barnes for life, and upon her death to his daughter, Betsy Barnes. Testator bequeathed his land, being allotment 39 section D, parish of Boort, to his son Matthew Barnes absolutely ; to his son Mark Barnes his land being allotment 5 section D, parish of Boort, allotment 5a section D. allotment or. section D, allotment 5c section D, allotment 6 section D, and allotment 9 section D. Testator charged these allotments with the payment of £100 free of duty to testator's grandson Arthur Burgess, and of £100 free of duty to testator' son-in-law Henry Haw, these amounts to be paid within 12 months of decease of testator. Testator directed the residue of his estate to be sold and the proceeds to be divided as follows : to his son Arthur Barnes £250 free of probate duty, and the residue equally to his daughters Mary Alice Burgess, Hannah Sutton, Ellen Haw, and Betsy Barnes. Testator died 30th April, 1895, and the estate is sworn at £2,175, 18s real, and £473 12s personal ; total, £2,049 10s.
