Obituary.

Mr Cornelius Barnes
One by one the old pioneers, who saw the rise of Parkes from its discovery to the zenith of its glory as a mining field, and who have seen the surrounding district develop from a mere sheep-walk to a thriving agricultural centre, are passing away, and taking their last sad journey over the hill to that quiet God's acre where so many of their companions, whose names are so closely associated with the fortunes of Parkes as a mining field, are laid to rest.
The last to join the great majority has been Mr Con Barnes, who passed away at an early hour on Sunday morning, after a lengthy illness. The late Mr Barnes, who was 71 years of age, was a native of Wollongong. He gained his first experience of mining on the Victorian fields. He next tried his fortunes at Tuena, and then at Young, or Lambing Flat as it was known in the early days. Mr Barnes took part in the first rush to Forbes, but afterwards returned to Young, where he married. Grenfell was the next field that claimed him as an active miner, and from Grenfell he came on to Parkes, where he was one of the first on the field. Parkes has claimed him as a resident ever since. He took part in the establishment of the local 'Oddfellow's Lodge' (Manchester Unity) and a number of members took part in the funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. The Rev. Father Howard officiated at the grave. The deceased pioneer leaves a wife, three sons and two daughters to mourn his loss, and the deepest sympathy is extended to them in their bereavement.
