At the time of their marriage, Thomas aged 30 and Mary Jane aged 16 were residents of Humpybong, on the Redcliffe peninsular near Brisbane. Thomas was a bachelor and labourer at the time. He was born in Sherborne, Dorset, England, the son of Thomas Barnes a blacksmith and machine maker and Mary Anne Welsh. Mary Jane was a spinster engaged in domestic duties. She was born in Port Philip, Victoria, the daughter of William Long a sawyer and Mary Mooney. The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas and Mary Snook. They were married before Colin McCulloch, at the Wickham Terrace Manse of the Presbyterian Church. Mary Jane's father gave his consent to the marriage as she was under 21 at the time.[3]
