Lucy was born in Dorchester, on the 21st of January 1837, the daughter of William and Julia Barnes. She was baptised on July 18, at Holy Trinity, Nailsea[1]
Lucy grew up in Dorchester, living with her family at the school in South Street. [2][3][4]
Her father William Barnes the noted Dorset poet, was fascinated by language and remembered for his dialect poems. Lucy was educated at home and followed her father starting to write at an early age. She saved her earnings from articles and short stories to visit Italy.
Whilst in Italy she met and married Samuel Thomas Baxter at the British Consulate in Florence, Italy on 4th April 1868[5]. Florence became her home and together she and Thomas had 3 children.
She continued her literary career, writing articles on a number of subjects, including an important work on Romanesque Architecture, The Cathedral Builders and a biography of her father, William Barnes (archive books).
Lucy, published her works under the pseudonym of Leader Scott. (Leader after her maternal grand mother, Isabelle and Scott, after her paternal Grandmother Grace) The pen name was chosen for her by her father. In 1882,she was elected an honorary member of the Italian Accademia clelle delle Arti.

' Sculpture, Renaissance Baylis and Modern,' 1886. 9. 'Life of William Barnes,' 1887. 10. 'Tuscan Studies and Sketches,' 1887. 11. 'Vincigliata and Maiano,' Florence and London, 1891. 12. ' The Orti Oricellari,' Florence, 1893. 13. ' Echoes of Old Florence,' Florence and London, 1894. 14. ' The Renunciation of Helen,' 1898. 15. 'Filippo di Ser Brunellesco ' (' Great Masters ' series), 1901. 16. 'Correggio' (Bell's 'Miniature Series of Painters'), 1902. She translated from the Italian ' Sir John Hawkwood,' by John Temple Leader and G. Marcotti (1889).[9]
She died on November 10th 1902 and was buried in plot 2ppsSF VI 25s in the Cimitero Evangelica degli Allori in Florence. [10]
