Biography

Lucy was born in Dorchester, on the 21st of January 1837, the daughter of William and Julia Barnes. She was baptised on July 18, at Holy Trinity, Nailsea[1]

Her father William Barnes the noted Dorset poet, was fascinated by language and remembered for his dialect poems. Lucy was educated at home and followed her father starting to write at an early age. She saved her earnings from articles and short stories to visit Italy.

Whilst in Italy she met and married Samuel Thomas Baxter at the British Consulate in Florence, Italy on 4th April 1868[5]. Florence became her home and together she and Thomas had 3 children.
