Overview Hannah was born in 1817 to parents Joseph Barron and Ann Pendlebury. She was the eldest daughter, and the third of their eight children. Hannah married twice. Her first marriage was when she was about 19 years old. Sadly her husband passed away a few years later. She had two children from that marriage. Her next marriage was about a decade later. From this marriage she had seven children. By the 1861 Census, Hannah was widowed again, and remained a widow in the 1871 Census. No other records were found for Hannah.
Hannah Barron was born in 1817 to parents Joseph Barron and Ann Pendlebury. She was baptized on September 7, 1817 at St Mary the Virgin, in Hunslet, Yorkshire, England. [1] Her father was a smith and later became a glass bottle manufacturer with his sons in Mexborough.
At approximately age 19, Hannah married Benjamin Townsley on June 11, 1836, in Featherstone, Yorkshire, England.[1] Her brother Thomas' future wife, Mary Hartley was a witness and left her mark on the marriage bann. [2]
On December 25, 1836 Hannah and Benjamin christened their first child, Harriet Townsley in Castleford. According to the math Hannah was a couple of months pregnant when she married Benjamin. Benjamin was listed as a glass blower on Harriet's christening record. [3]
In the 1841 England Census, Hannah was listed under her married name of Townsley and lived with her parents, her daughter Harriet Townsley age 4, and Henry Pendlebury. Although their relationship is not listed it is assumed Henry Pendlebury is a cousin from her mother's side of the family. Walter Barron, age 2 is also listed on the census and was the grandson of Joseph and Ann Barron. [4]
Sometime between 1836 and 1841 Hannah's first husband, Benjamin died. One burial record was found for a Benjamin Townsley who was buried in Castleford August 30, 1839. It is not confirmed this is the same Benjamin Townsley. [5]
On November, 26, 1843, Hannah christened her illegitimate son Francis Townsley. [6] Hannah possibly name her son after her brother Francis who died in 1828, at the age of three. Hannah would have been 7 years old when her little brother died. [7]
Hannah's second marriage was to John Kelly on February 2, 1845 at the Pontefract parish church. Hannah is listed as a widow with no occupation. She left her mark on the marriage bann. John Kelly was a bachelor and was an assistant to (?) and miners. [8]
By 1851, Hannah and John lived at 39 Clegg Building in Pontefract with Harriet Townsley age 14, Hannah's daughter from her first marriage; Joseph Kelly age 5; Eliza Ann Kelly age 4; Hugh J. Kelly age 2. John was a porter for the railway, Hannah was a dress maker, and Harriet was a steam loom weaver. [9]
In 1861, Hannah was a widow and lived at 45 Lees Yard, Leeds with her children Frances Townsley, Joseph Kelly, Eliza Ann Kelly, Hugh J. Kelly, William Kelly, John E. Kelly, David Kelly, and Ruth Kelly. Note that their surname is incorrectly spelled Kelley on the census record. [10]
In 1871, Hannah was listed as Ann Kelly on the census record. She remained a widow and lived at 2 Ripon, Leeds with her children Joseph, William, John E., David and Ruth. Hannah worked as a char woman. [11]
