Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Richard Barrow Sr. was a North Carolina colonist.

Richard is the son of William Barrow and Elizabeth. At the time of his birth, his father was documented in Bath County, Carolina.

His father, William Barrow, of ye precinct of Hide in ye County of Bath in ye Province of North Carolina, wrote his Last Will and Testament on the 8th day of January 1715 in which he bequeathed to William, John & Richard Barrow, my Plantation whereon I now live, containing fourteen hundred Acres of land more or less, to be Equally divided between the three Sons.[1][2]

On the 21st day of July 1730, Richard Barrow of Bath County sold to William Harris, now of Bath County sd province marriner, acertain plantation or tract of land, 486 acres, lying on the South side of Matikapungo creek begining at the mouth of Jacks creek...which is John Barrow's SE corner bounds then running a northerly line by John Barows land, which land was patented to Captn William Barrow deceased the 29th day of November 1714, and was given to Richard Barrow by his father Captn William Barrow deceased the 8th day of January 1715.[3] The deed was witnessed by Wm. Barrow and Mary (her mark) Barrow.

On the 27th day of November 1734, Joseph Barrow of the County of Bath in North Carolina sold unto Richard Barrow all that part and parcel of land lying on the west side of Pango swamp being the land he now lives on and being all that parcel of land that is in the upper part of the survey running toward the main road. Witnessed by James Barrow and Peter Caila.[4]

On the 9th day of June 1735, Richard and Mary Barrow of Hyde Precinct sold to James Artiree, in consideration of 120 barrels of Tar, 350 acres of land bounded on Matchapungo river.[5] Richard purchased from Joseph Barrow of Bath County another parcel of land containing 100 acres on the 23rd day of August 1735.[5]

Richard Barrow was granted 640 acres of land in Beaufort County on the south side of the Tarr River being the plantation where the said Barrow now lives on the 31st day of January 1755.[6] With the creation of Pitt County in 1760 from Beaufort County, the 640 acres of land then lie in the county of Pitt. The 1762 Tax List for Pitt County charged Richard Barrow for three whites which included Richard, Ruben, and Joseph.[7] On the 2nd day of February 1765, Abraham Barrow, Planter, sold to Moses Tison Senr., Planter, a tract or parcel of land containing 200 acres on the South side of the Tarr River in the county of Pitt, part of a tract of 640 acres of land granted Lord Granville 31 __[written in margin] 1755 lying on the South side of a Branch called Hardees Run and noted as bounding on Rich'd Barrow's line.[8]

According to descendants, Richard passed away about 1768. On the 4th day of April 1770, sons, Richard Barrow and Reuben Barrow, of Pitt County, Planters, sold 280 acres to Benjamin Randall, it being part of a tract of land granted unto Richard Barrow bearing date January 31st 1755.[9] The 1774 Tax List for Pitt County only recorded Benjamin Barrow.

Notes

I believe it is possibly an error to ID a Mary Goodwin as wife of Barrow-665. His son, Richard Barrow Jr., married a Mary Godwin-2503, which likely caused some confusion. There is an exhaustive history accessible online of the ancestry of Reuben Barrow in which it is said that Richard Sr.'s wife is a Mary, unknown surname. The Barrows were established in the South for generations so the Massachusetts location given as her birthplace in her profile adds to the uncertainty. At one time I thought Pvt. Reuben Barrow-664 and Reuben Barrow- 2696 could be a merge, but that would be a mistake. I think they were two different men who fought on opposite sides in the Revolutionary War. (I can trace DNA matches from Richard Sr.; Richard Jr. and wife Mary Godwin; their son Reuben Barrow- 2696, and wife Mary Jane Johnson; and Amelia Barrow Griffith, my greatx3 grandmother. Neither the Massachusetts Mary nor Pvt. Barrow are in that line-up.) I certainly am not suggesting I have the answers to exactly who's who in the Barrow family tree! Just interested in possibly helping to sort it out.

I am not finding evidence to support naming Mary Goodwin as Richard Sr's wife. Richard Jr married a Mary Godwin, which may have caused some confusion. The Barrows were well established in the South for generations, so the Massachusetts location for M.Goodwin adds to the uncertainty. There is an exhaustive study accessible online "Ancestry of Reuben Barrow" in which Richards wife is named "Mary, surname unknown." At one time I thought the two Reuben Barrows might be the same person, but that is not correct. I'll keep looking and see if I can add anything helpful to our family search! (My name now appears as a DNA match on all of my Barrow tree tracing from Richard Sr. down to me. The only ones that had not matched were the Massachusetts Goodwin and Private Reuben Barrow.) The search goes on! (I've not copied the exact website of the Pitts County Barrow article because it comes up as "not secure." It has not caused me any problems but I don't want to cause any for anyone else. It is easy to find with a Google search if you want to check it out. )

Barrow-837 and Barrow-665 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicates, please merge and clean up adding sources for facts (not online family trees or messages as these are generally unsourced themselves). Thank you
