Biography

Duncan was born in 1892. He is the son of John Wells Barter. [1]

Duncan was the twin of Robert.

He signed-up for WW1 on July 23, 1915. He was married at that time, but listed his father, "John M Barter", as his next-of-kin. He was a Lumberman at the time. We was severely wounded at the Somme (September 28, 1916), hit by bullets or shrapnel horizontally through the left back, exiting the left front abdomen, and vertically through the left leg from the hip to the knee. He was initially treated at No. 11 Staty Hos in Rouen, transferred to CCH Bearwood in Wokingham, England. He was discharged to Canada on May 15, 1917, and given a permanent medical pension. Military medical records conclude that Duncan had a weakness in his left leg.

He was living in his parents home at the time of the 1921 Canada Census, though it was clearly marked that he was married on his enlistment papers. This was probably an error by the recruiting office, as two other forms in his war record list him as "Single" or not married.

His wife "Annie Dimock" was living at home with her parents and unmarried at the time of the 1921 Canada Census.

Darlene Campbell (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dar&id=I3729) noted the marriage date of Duncan and Annie to be: 21 April 1928.

He appears to have died without children.

Duncan and his wife, Annie May (nee Dimock), share a gravestone.
