Overview
Solomon was born in Baddersley Ensor, where his father was a publican. His father later took on the Plough Inn at Mancetter where Solomon grew up with his siblings. Solomon was a coal miner for most of his working life. He married Lillie Benn and they had 13 children, living at 37 Erdington Rd, Atherstone. Lillie died when their youngest was just 4 and Solomon died just 6 years later in a cycling accident.
Life History
Solomon was baptised in July 1888 in Baddersley Ensor, son of William Bartlam, publican, and Alice Ison. [1]
Solomon was a coal miner and married Lillie Benn in 1912. [2]
They had 13 children together. [3]
Wife Lille died in 1937, age 47, when their youngest was just 4 years old. In 1939, Solomon had 8 of his children living with him at 37 Erdington Rd Atherstone. [4]
Solomon was killed aged 55 in a cycling accident in 1943 at the junction of the Mancetter Road and Woodford Lane, near the Iron Bridge. This was the second fatality in that same location, and an inquest was held. Solomon was riding his cycle and was knocked down and killed by a motor lorry.
At the time of the accident, Solomon had been on his way to visit his son at Chapel End. Solomon was employed as a gardener by Dr H.R. Fisher of Atherstone. Solomon had previously worked at a colliery.
A Halt sign was erected after his death in an effort to prevent more accidents. [5]
