Biography

ELIJAH BARTLETT,[1] baptized at Brookfield, Massachusetts, 6 Mar 1725[2] son of Thomas Bartlett and Mary Bartlett;[3] Elijah died at Brookfield, 22 Aug 1788;[4][5] married at Brookfield, 11 Jan 1749/50,[6] BATHSHEBA GILBERT, born at Brookfield, 28 Mar 1729 daughter of David and Hannah (Abbott) Gilbert;[7] Bathsheba died at Brookfield, 4 Aug 1807.[8][9]

Bathsheba Gilbert and Elijah Bartlett resided in Brookfield, Massachusetts where they kept a farm. Elijah was a blacksmith and cooper by trade.

Elijah Bartlett served from Brookfield as a private in the company of Capt. Thomas Buckminster with service from 6 August 1748 to 20 August 1748 at Fort Dummer.[10]

On 26 December 1787, Elijah Bartlett yeoman of Brookfield, in consideration of £250, entered into an agreement with his son Elijah, Jr husbandman of Brookfield for the transfer of the homestead farm in Brookfield to Elijah, Jr. with Elijah, Jr. agreeing to make no sale of the property during the natural life of his father.[11]

In his will written 30 January 1787 (allowed 4 November 1788), Elijah Gilbert bequeathed to beloved wife Bathsheba the income and profits of one-third of the real estate remaining at his decease and the use of the east room of the dwelling house. She is to have comfortable support from the estate during her natural life. Daughter Mercy Thomas wife of Daniel Thomas receives £20. Son Elisha Bartlett of Montague receives one-half of the real estate and was named sole executor. Daughter Miriam wife of Ithamar Bowker of Conway receives £20. Son Ebenezer Bartlett of Montague receives the remaining half of the real estate. Daughter Sarah Ross wife of Amasa Ross of Worthington receives £20. Daughter Hannah Bartlett receives £40. Son Elijah, Jr. receives all the blacksmithing and cooper’s tools. Daughter Huldah Bartlett receives £40. David Gilbert, Jr. of Montague son of David Gilbert receives two notes signed by David for money owed to Elijah. Granddaughter Parthena Thomas daughter of Daniel and Mercy Thomas receives £20 to be paid at marriage. Each of his grandchildren is to have a bible. Any residue of the estate is to go to his wife Bathsheba. In a codicil written 23 October 1788, son Elisha was removed as executor and son Elijah, Jr. was named sole executor. Real estate was valued at £420 and personal estate at £233.12.9. On 8 November 1788, Elisha Bartlett and Ebenezer Bartlett both of Montague, for payment of £60, quitclaimed their interest in the real and personal estate to their brother Elijah Bartlett, Jr.[12]

In 1790, Bathsheba Bartlett headed a household of three females at Brookfield.[13]

Elijah Bartlett and Bathsheba Gilbert were parents of nine children born at Brookfield.[14]

i MARCY BARTLETT, b. 14 Sep 1751;[15] d. at Hardwick, MA, 24 Apr 1824; m. at Brookfield, 30 Aug 1770, DANIEL THOMAS, b. at Hardwick, 5 May 1750 son of Amos and Abigail (Farr) Thomas; a death record for Daniel was not found, but History of Hardwick reports “he died not too many years” after his wife.[16]

ii ELISHA BARTLETT, b. 3 May 1753;[17] d. at Montague, MA, 7 Sep 1817; m. at Bridgewater, MA, 11 May 1778, REBECCA WATERMAN, b. at Halifax, MA, 20 Dec 1754 daughter of Perez and Abigail (Bryant) Waterman; Rebecca d. at Waterbury, VT, 28 Jun 1848.

iii MIRIAM BARTLETT, b. 1 Aug 1754;[18] d. at Ashfield, MA, by 1793; m. at Brookfield, 1 May 1775, ITHAMAR BOWKER, b. 27 Nov 1750 son of Josiah and Hasadiah (Eager) Bowker. Ithamar married second at Ashfield, Sarah Daniels, in May 1793. Ithamar was living at New York, NY in 1818.[19]

iv EBENEZER BARTLETT, b. 25 Apr 1756;[20] m. 1 Feb 1784, MARY “MOLLY” ABBOTT, b. at Brookfield, 12 Mar 1764 daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Dodge) Abbott.[21]

v SARAH BARTLETT, b. 11 Feb 1759;[22] d. at Peru, MA, 10 Mar 1825; m. at Brookfield, 13 Dec 1781, AMASA ROSS, b. 5 Jul 1750 son of James and Sarah (Gilbert) Ross; Amasa d. at Peru, MA, 30 Jul 1807.

vi ELIJAH BARTLETT, b. 20 Jul 1760;[23] d. at Brookfield, 22 Aug 1840; m. at Brookfield, 6 Nov 1783, WAITSTILL CLAPP, b. at Middleborough, MA, 21 Jan 1765 daughter of Elijah and Hope (Thomas) Clapp; Waitstill d. at Brookfield, 21 May 1841.

vii HANNAH BARTLETT, b. 23 Feb 1761;[24] d. at Brookfield, 24 Jun 1812; m. at Brookfield, 18 Dec 1796, JONATHAN WATERMAN, b. at Halifax, MA, 20 Feb 1748 son of Perez and Abigail (Bryant) Waterman; Jonathan d. at Brookfield, 19 Jul 1842.
