Biography

Sarah Ann Barty was born in 1852 and baptised on 3 Oct 1852 at Saint Werburgh Hoo, Kent, England. She was the daughter of John Barty and Sarah Pointer.^[1][2]

In the 1861 census, Sarah Barty was age 9 living at Sharnal St, High Halstow, Kent with her father John Barty (48?), mother Sarah Barty (32), siblings William Barty (6), Emma Barty (2). Also three boarders.^[3]

Charles Chesterton, a Sergeant in the 23rd Reg, married Sarah Ann Barty on 20 Dec 1870 at St Mark, Gillingham, Kent.^[4] They had six children: Sarah Emma Chesterton (1877–1883), Eliza Catherine Chesterton (1879–1882), Emma Florence Chesterton (1881–1881), Charles John James Chesterton (b. 1883), William George Chesterton (b. 1885), James Edward Chesterton (b. 1887).

In the 1871 census, Sarah Chesterton was age 18 living at Gillingham, Kent with her husband Chas Chesterton (23), sister Eliza Barty (9).^[5]

In the 1881 census, Sarah A Chesterton was age 28 living at Corporation Bldgs, Clerkenwell, London with her husband Charles Chesterton (32), daughters Sarah E Chesterton (4), Eliza C Chesterton (2).^[6]

Sarah's husband Charles Chesterton died in 1888.

In the 1891 census, Sarah Chesterton was age 38, widowed, living at Ratcliff Highway, Hoo, Kent with her sons Charles Chesterton (8), William Chesterton (6), James Chesterton (4). Also a boarder Herbert Wise (24). Occupation: Laundress.^[7]

In the 1901 census, Sarah Chesterton was age 48 living at Saint Werburgh Hoo, Kent with her sons William Chesterton (16), James Chesterton (14). Occupation: Domestic Nurse.^[8]

In the 1911 census, Sarah Chesterton was age 58 living at Hoo, Kent with her sons William Chesterton (26), James Chesterton (23). Also boarder Rose Beal (9). Occupation: Village Nurse.^[9]

Sarah Ann Chesterton of Star Elm Cottages, Hoo, Kent died in 1934 age 82. She was buried on 24 Sep 1934 at Saint Werburgh, Hoo.^[10][11]
