Biography

John Pollexfen Bastard M.P. (1756-1816)
He was a lieutenant-colonel of the East Devon militia, raised by his father to defend Plymouth in the invasion scare of 1779. (Lt.-col. E. Devon militia 1787, col. 1798-d.; col.-in-chief, Devon vols. 1803).
In 1801 when colonel of the same regiment John Pollexfen Bastard quelled a riot of workmen and prevented the destruction of the Plymouth docks and dockyards.
He was a member of the British Parliament for Sidence, Kitley, in Devonshire and Hockhinge, Berkshire,
In 1815 he was conveyed by the Royal Navy to Livorno for his health where he died the next year and was initially buried in the Old English Cemetery in Livorno, where his monument still stands. His body was returned to Devon in a man-of-war,when his remains were interred in St Bartholomew's Churchyard, Yealmpton, Devon.
