William Bate was born in about 1685 in Foston, Derbyshire, England. He was the son of Richard Bate of Barbados and Foston, Derbyshire, and his wife Sarah nee Newton.
Foston Hall in South Derbyshire was sold to William’s father, Richard Bate of London, merchant, in 1679.
William married Arabella Chambers (27) (born in 1690 in Derby, Derbyshire; daughter of Thomas Chambers) on March 20, 1718 in Scropton, Derbyshire.[1] Their children were:
William inherited Woodland estate in St George, Barbados, from his mother Sarah. He was described as of Foston, Derbyshire, brother and heir at law of Raynes Bate deceased late of Foston and the Island of Barbados in 1720. William Bate brought several Chancery cases in the 1720s and 1730s.
William married secondly Anne Clavering.
