Richard Bate was born on 6 Dec 1831, and christened on 8 Jan 1832 at Newton Chapel of Ease in the parish of Winwick, Lancashire. He was the son of William and Betty Bate. His father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Newton. [1]

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Mount Pleasant, Eccleston in Prescot, Lancashire; Richard's father was a labourer. [2]

By March 30th 1851, they were living in Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire; Richard's father was a chemical labourer, and so was Richard. [3]
