In August 1847 he was the Custom-house Officer in Fremantle.
After his father died in the 1860's he commenced business with his brother as J & W Bateman. They were shipping agents, wholesalers and merchants.
He never married.
In 1875 he was declared a lunatic and his brother put in charge of his affairs.
He is buried with his father in Fremantle Cemetery.
