St Laurence Appleton |
Edward Batten was born in Berkshire, England son of Simon Batten and his wife, Transilla Coxhead. He was baptised at the Parish Church of Appleton with Eaton on the 7th of March 1620. [1]
Ships on the Medway |
As a second son, it was unlikely that he would find a farm to work and he took himself down the River Thames to Rochester in Kent and there became a chandler. Rochester was a different world from his birthplace, with great warships sailing on the River Medway and the bustle of Chatham not far away. Edward evidently did well for on the 4th of September 1652 he was made a Freeman of the City, gratis, the Mayor's Freeman. [2] A month later he married Sarah Tredwell at St Peter and St Paul at Milton by Gravesend on the 13th of October 1652. [3]
Dutch on the Medway |
War with the Dutch had again broken out in March 1665. [4] Being predominately a naval war it was a good time for chandlers but in June 1667 a Dutch fleet sailed up the River Medway with the intention of burning the dockyard at Chatham. The Dutch sacked Sheerness, burned Upnor Castle and, after several days, reached Chatham where they burned the English fleet and towed away the "Royal Charles" but spared the dockyard. [5]
Edward had clearly kept in touch with his family in Berkshire for when his mother died in 1671 she remembered Edward and his daughter, Transilla, in her will. [6]
Edward died in 1697. [7]
So far as is known Edward was no relation whatsoever of Sir William Batten, Freeman of Rochester and Member of Parliament.
