Anna Baumann is identified as the wife of Hans Meyer, and is assumed to have been born c.1635 and to have been the daughter of a Swiss Mennonite family. Further evidence is sought to confirm.
By the mid-1600's, most of the Mennonite families had left Switzerland and settled in Germany, but here also they were often subject to restrictions, and were closely monitored by the state. One source, reporting on records from the 1670's and 1680's, notes that : In a town near Ibersheim named Rudelsheim were found the Mennonites Hans Meyer, Anna Baumann, Hans Jakob Hagmann and Maria Brubacher, whose "lives and behaviour ... were neighbourly to date".[1] Hans and Anna are recorded in 1685 as Anabaptists living at Rudelsheim (now Ludwigshöhe) Germany, with their nine children, two of whom were married. [2][3] A transcription of the entry from the 1685 census of Rudelsheim lists "Hans Mayer, Hausfrau Anna Baumannin, 9 kinder, 2 sind in der Ehe, 7 hat er noch bei sich."[4]
In his hypothetical 1709 "census", Davis locates Hans (age 79) and Anna still in Rudelsheim, with sons Rudolph (age 29) and Heinrich (age 25).[5] (No such census existed and Davis's construction may be incorrect.)
and three more children (names not known) born in the 1670's.
Possible sources for Anna
There does not seem to be any well researched and documented source for Anna's origin. Without solid sourcing her birth location and parentage should be considered speculation. This section is a list of documented Anna Baumans who *might possibly* be our Anna.
BU3466 Anna Buman, bap. Mar. 17, 1639; no age given ir11640; not in 1646 census. Daughter of BU346 Oswald Buman and (2nd wife) Judith Dandliker.
Current profile parents BU416 Rudolf Buman and Margareth Landis are not listed with a daughter Anna.
Notes
It is not certain that Henrich was a child of this family, and under the present construction Anna would have been aged 49 when he was born. Either Anna was born much later, or she was not the mother of Henrich - the latter seems more likely.
An earlier unsourced version of the profile recorded Anna's death in 18 Jan 1686 in Hohenacker. This is almost certainly incorrect - Anna is known to have been in Rudelsheim in 1685, and Esslingen is over 200 km further south - and the reference has been removed from the profile.
