Christian Messenger - Friday, 20 August 1852 - Page 265 - Obituary of Mrs. Elizabeth Spinney -

Among the numerous considerations which may still impress the writer’s mind with a consciousness, that “the time of his departure is at hand,” is the fact that nearly all the parents whose children attended his school in Aylesford thirty seven years ago, have now “gone the way of all the earth.” Of these, sister Spinney, an esteemed member of his church, has been called home during the time of his absence as Delegate to the Eastern Association of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. It appears the subject of this obituary obtained a hope in the Saviour in the season of her youth; and that not long after her marriage, her husband, the late Mr. Samuel Spinney, and she were baptized by the Rev. T.H. Chipman, and united with the church over which he presided in Nictaux. On the formation of a Baptist Church in Aylesford, where they resided, they became members of it. About twenty-one years ago sister Spinney was called to part with the beloved companion of her youth. The Lord, however, has graciously enabled her to appropriate to herself that cheering declaration, “Thy maker is thy Husband.” When the writer came to reside again in Aylesford, a year since, he was naturally led to search out his old friends; and it afforded him much pleasure to renew the agreeable acquaintance formed many years before with this valued sister in Christ; and to find her still steadfast in the faith, and pursuing her journey to the heavenly rest. As she had long delighted in attending the public worship of God, so she continued gladly to avail herself of this privilege as frequently as it was in her power. From pastoral visits she evidently derived much consolation. During her last sickness, which was of about three months continuance - soothed by unremitted filial attention - she was calm and submissive, and expressed a firm reliance upon her Redeemer. On the 8th day of July, 1852, in the 75th year of her age, she quietly surrendered her departing spirit into his faithful hands. As the Pastor of the church was absent, Rev. William Chipman obligingly attended the funeral, and preached an appropriate sermon from Job xiv 1. Sister Spinney was the mother of twelve children, who all survived her, and were present at her funeral. The number of mourning relatives assembled on the occasion was unusually great. A very large concourse of sympathizing friends evinced, by their serious attendance, the esteem in which she was held by the community. She appears, indeed, to have been universally regarded as a peaceable and obliging neighbor, a faithful friend, a kind parent, and a sincere Christian. Communicated by Rev. C. Tupper. Aylesford, July 24, 1852.
