Philip Bearcroft DD (1695 - 1761) was an English clergyman and antiquary. Born in the city of Worcester on 21 February 1695,[1] he was the eldest child of Philip Bearcroft and his wife Elizabeth Ford. His father was a member of an old-established family of landed gentry whose ancestral estate was at Mere Hall in the parish of Hanbury, Worcestershire.[2] After education at Charterhouse School, in 1712 he entered Magdalen Hall, Oxford, gaining a BA in 1716. In 1719 he became a fellow of Merton College, Oxford, and was awarded an MA, adding BD and DD in 1730.
Ordained deacon in 1718 and priest in 1719, in 1724 he was appointed Preacher to the Charterhouse, in 1731 vicar of Elham, Kent, in 1738 an Honorary Chaplain to King George II, in 1739 Secretary to the Society for Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, in 1743 rector of Stourmouth, Kent, in 1753 the Master of Charterhouse, and in 1755 a prebendary of Wells Cathedral. In 1737 he published "An Historical Account of Thomas Sutton, Esquire, and of his foundation in Charter-house".
On 4 March 1730 he married Elizabeth Lovegrove, widow of a man called Roberts, and they had three sons: Philip born 1731,[3] Edward born 1737, and William born 1740. After Elizabeth's death, on 18 October 1753 he married Mary Coventry,[4] widow of Henry Barker and daughter of Thomas Coventry, the brother of William Coventry, 5th Earl of Coventry. He died on 17 October 1761 in London, survived by his second wife.
