Biography

Nancy was born in 1832, the daughter of Holloway and Elizabeth (Jefferson) Beatty.

Nancy married James Stutesman (1829-1864) in 1850. They had four children.

  1. Jane Stutesman, b. 1852, d. 1859
  2. Harriet Stutesman, b. 1854
  3. Samuel Stutesman, b. 1857, d. 1928
  4. Sarah Elizabeth Stutesman, b. 1862, d. 1909

During the Civil War, James Stutesman served as a Corporal in Company H, 100th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was killed in action at the Battle of Utoy Creek, Georgia, in 1864.

Nancy married John Olmstead in 1866. She brought three children (Harriet, Samuel and Sarah Stutesman) into the blended family. Nancy and John had two children.

  2. Esther J. Olmstead, b. 1872, d. 1920

Nancy and John apparently separated before 1900. In 1900, Nancy was living with the Charles Stutesman household, as a housekeeper, in Chesterfield, OH, while John was living with stepson Samuel Stutesman and his family in Pike Township, OH.

She passed away in 1918 and was interred at Roos Cemetery, Lyons, Fulton County, Ohio.

Mrs. Nancy Olmstead, a pioneer resident of Oak Shade, died at her home Monday morning. Mrs. Olmstead was a useful woman in her neighborhood and will be missed. Funeral services were held at Oak Shade church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.--Fulton County Tribune (Wauseon, OH), March 8, 1918, p. 5.
Nancy Olmstead, daughter of Holloway and Elizabeth, Beatty, Was born in Sparta, N. J., Sept. 5, 1832, and died March 5, 1918, aged 85 years and 6 months. Her parents were among the early pioneers, coming to this county in 1845. She was one of a family of eight children, two of whom survive her--Sidney Beatty of this place, and Mrs. Julia Gates of Morenci. At the age of 17 she was united in marriage with James Stutesman, and to this union were born four children, three of whom, with her husband, have preceded her to the better land; the other, Samuel J., was until recently a well-known farmer of this township. She was married a second time to John Olmstead; to them were born two children, Clara Coleman of Royalton, and Esther Wing of Delta, she is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one stepson. Charles Olmstead, and 6 grandchildren. She was a charter member of East Chesterfield Disciple church, and was baptized and gave her heart to God during the ministry of the Rev. L. L. Carpenter. In the death of Aunt Nancy, or "Grandma" as she was lovingly called by old and young, Oak Shade loses her oldest resident, and a woman of sterling worth and integrity. Funeral services were held at Oak Shade church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Degroat.--Fulton County Tribune (Wauseon, OH), March 15, 1918, p. 7.
