Biography

This profile is part of the Beaty Name Study.

Lundy Beaty was born on February 20, 1873 in Paw Creek, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States.[1] Her parents were James Beaty, a Confederate veteran, and Frances Smith.

Lundy was only 10 years old when her father died in 1880. The 1880 census was taken shortly before her father died. In the household with Lundy and her parents were older siblings William Leeroy, Amelia, and Lucy, and younger siblings Amos and Edward.[2]

At the age of 19, Lundy married George Luther Neal on October 05, 1892 in Paw Creek. C. L. Gibson, Justice of the Peace was the officiant. Witnesses to the ceremony were Jim Beatty, Attie Neal, and Charlie Gibson.[3] They would remained married for just short of 61 years.

Together they had 9 children:

  1. Beatrice Neal
  2. Boyte Neal
  3. George Neal
  4. Ruby Neal
  5. Franklie Neal
  6. James Neal
  7. Emma Neal
  8. Harrill Neal
  9. Vernon Neal

Lundy was living in Paw Creek with her husband the three children when Charles F. Alexander enumerator the Neal family in 1900. Luther was farming, and the exact location of his and Lundy's abode must have been in the area of Moore's Chapel, this based on the names of their neighbors. Both were considered literate.[4]

In 1901, Lundy and Luther bought a piece of property and built a home with the help of Luther's first cousin, once removed, Jacob Sidney Underwood. The home was finished shortly before Christmas of that year.

Census enumerator M. M. McCord recorded the Neal family in 1910, living on the farm that Lundy and Luther had established some nine years before with five children in the household. In the intervening years, Lundy grieved the loss of two children, Ruby Eugenia, named after her mother, who died at seven months in 1902, and James Holland, who died at a year and a half in 1907 and was named after Lundy's brother-in-law, Rufus Holland Reid. The three oldest children, though in school that census year, were also listed as farm laborers.[5]

Lundy died on 25 June 1960 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, of advanced cerebral arteriosclerosis with senile dementia, the onset of which began three years previously. Her daughter, Emma Adeline Neal, was the informant on Lundy's death certificate.[6] She was buried beside her husband at Forest Lawn Cemetery (now known as First Lawn West Cemetery) in Charlotte, North Carolina, on 26 June 1960.[7]

Lundy was the last surviving founding member of the Moore's Chapel Methodist Church.[8]
