Christopher Sutton mentioned in the record of Christopher Sutton and Hope Branmount Name Christopher Sutton Spouse's Name Hope Branmount Event Date 03 Nov 1703 Event Place Christchurch, Middlesex, Virginia
The first definite information on the immediate ancestors of Hope Beaumont Sutton is supplied by a deed dated 1687 executed by William Beaumont by which he conveyed one -hundred acres to Patrick Miller, signing his name, and declaring it to be part of a division of a one thousand acre parcel granted Corrigrine (Peregrine) Bland on August 10, 1642. (Middlesex Co. Deeds 1679-1690 pp. 292-293.T On page 294, same reference, he declared that the. land had descended to him through Hope Bland, the daughter of Peregrine Bland. These documents were witnessed by William Churchill and Thomas Dudley. A fuller text is here reproduced that the reader may see the certainty of relationships it reveals.

Then follows the description of the land sold and the signing and witnessing of the transaction. Middlesex Deeds and Wills No. II 1679-1694 pp. 292-295.
Two William Beaumonts appear on the scene at this time. It seems that they did not reside in Lower Christ Church Parish but that they were of Middlesex County is certain. They might have belonged to the Upper Parish, the register of which is lost. It seems likely that the William Beaumont who died in 1700 was the husband of Hope Bland and father of William Beaumont who was selling in 1687. The names John and William Beaumont appear on the Middlesex County muster roll for 1687.
On October 10, 1687 William Beaumont married Elizabeth Hughes and both were said to be of Christ Church Parish. (Register p. 35.) These were the parents of Hope Beaumont Sutton. Elizabeth Hughes was probably the daughter of Mr. Richard Hughes of the Upper Parish. He was a prominent layman in that parish and it is recorded that he said the divine services in the upper parish for a year or so when there was no minister available. He was paid 1000 pounds of tobacco for performing this service but was required to turn over to the parish the fees received from saying weddings. The Virginia Magazine records a Reverend Mr. Hughes who may have been the same Richard. In 1691, William Beaumont and his wife Elizabeth gave for love and affection, one-hundred acres to William Barbee. This was surely the William Beaumont who had married Elizabeth Hughes. The relationship is not declared. William and Elizabeth were still young. It seems likely that Barbee had married either a sister of Wm. Beaumont or the sister of Elizabeth Hughes. The relationship was close and is useful for it helps establish the identity of Hope Beaumont as the daughter of William and Elizabeth.
Hope Beaumont's birth is not of record. She was probably about fifteen when she married Christopher Sutton in 1703. It is the selection of given names in her descendants which reveals her ancestry and makes it fairly clear in spite of the limitations of the record. Clearly, she was named for her ancestress, Hope Bland, mentioned in the sale of the one -hundred acres by William Beaumont in 1687. Her son, William Barbee Sutton was named for the William Barbee who received the gift of land. Her son Benjamin was named for Benjamin Barbee. Elizabeth Sutton was the namesake of Elizabeth Hughes, the grandmother. The given names Rowland and Armistead which appear among the Suttons are probably accounted for by Rowland Hughes and Ann Armistead wife of one of the Barbees. Finally, it is noted that Christopher Sutton and William Barbee acted together as the processioners of Christ Church. Very likely this interest in Church matters came through the Hughes family.[1]
