Biography

Rosa Catharine Beck, b 3 Mar 1894, in Neosho, Newton, Missouri. She was the daughter of James M. Beck and Arrena B. Edwards. [1][2] Her family were farmers, growing for the table and selling the rest. These were the golden growing years before the Dust Bowl drove folks off the land. [3]
Married: 08 Sep 1918: Rosa married Aaron Estle Hill in Haskell, Oklahoma, at age 24. [4] Together they had children:

The couple started out farming in Murray, then moved to Wewoka where the girls went to school. [5][6][7] Finally, they landed in a nice little home in Stigler about 1934. [8] Her husband worked as a Coal Miner and barbered at his brother's gas station which doubled as a meetup spot for the locals. In addition, Rosa still worked a small garden at the back of the house during the lean years when things got tough and the wind blew up swirling dust storms that crept through the crevices of every home, leaving silt on the sills and dust devils twisting through town.
Rosa Beck raised her girls with one certain principle - keep your floors clean. For most of her life, she had a dirt floor, stomped down every year with fresh soil. She had special brooms to sweep the packed clay to a near shine, making beautiful rag rugs to cover, doubly so the high-traffic areas. When her husband was finally able to lay down linoleum flooring, she was over the moon with happiness. A comforting woman, she passed on her skills and family values to her daughters with gentle words and hope for tomorrow. Difficult times were made to strengthen one's faith.
As she aged, her grandchildren were always excited to visit Grandma Beck, hoping she'd take them to the swimming hole not too far from the house. She usually did. Why she went by Grandma Beck instead of Hill, they could never figure out and she never explained it, but Grandpa HIll was never concerned about it at all. To him, she was just Rosie, never mind the details. In her elder years, the two made an inviting home together, once the children were gone, and Rosie wanted nothing but her devoted husband always by her side. [9]
Died: Rosa died 13 Nov 1956 in Stigler, Oklahoma.
