Biography

Vernon Kenneth Beckett was born 26 July 1930 in Seminole, Oklahoma. He was the tenth child born to Jesse Beckett and Ina Lance. Vernon quit school in the 8th grade and went to live with his sister, Beaulah and her husband in Guyman, Oklahoma. He joined the Army and served in Korea as a radioman. He was on active duty from 6 April 1951 to 6 February 1953 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal.

Vernon was married three times, according to his third wife, Marge Weiss Beckett. One wife was Mary Dean Butts, whom he married 4 Sept. 1954 in Guyman, Oklahoma. On the marriage license he stated he lived in Montana. Maybe he was stationed there at the time. The marriage ended in divorce on grounds of desertion. On May 27th 1957 he married Marge Weiss Beckett in a simple ceremony at the courthouse in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Vernon got a job with Olan Mills and began traveling in the Southeastern U.S. He and Marge settled in Pensacola, Florida where he worked at a photography studio and tended bar. Vernon had a relationship with Vera Smith while in Pensacola that produced a daughter, Linda born in December of 1960. A month and a half later, in February of 1961, Vernon and Marge welcomed their only child, a daughter, Lori Ann.

Their marriage was a troubled one due to Vernon's drinking and womanizing which would continue for the duration of the marriage. In 1966, Marge left him and took Lori with her to Tulsa, Oklahoma to live with her parents. Vernon followed them to Tulsa and patched things up with Marge promising things would change. Vernon went to work as a security guard with a local patrol service, Tulsa Security Patrol and they settled into life. In February of 1967, he welcomed another daughter, Larona as a result of a relationship with Darlene Scott. He would eventually go on to own Central Security Patrol for a number of years, which served the Southeastern Tulsa community. He eventually sold the company and went to work as an armed security guard for Utica Square and a number of local banks. In December of 1978, after making sure his daughter Lori was driving and could drive Marge to and from work and the store, he moved out to live on his own for the remainder of his life. He and Marge remained married until his death and would see each other for holiday gatherings and occasional breakfasts.

Vernon loved country music, in particular Bob Wills, Patsy Cline and Merle Haggard. He loved to watch cop shows on TV like Mannix and Kojack and he LOVED the Dukes of Hazzard. He was a dog lover but couldn't bring himself to have another after his beloved Tiny passed.

In April of 1994, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He died on 10 September 1994 surrounded by family. He is buried at Floral Haven in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. [1]
