From The Beckwiths: "... placed at the famous Kinderhook Academy, and was a schoolmate of Martin Van Buren, and graduated as a civil engineer, and with Professor Joseph Henry selected and surveyed the route of the Erie Rail Road. No contemporaneous engineer of the state enjoyed a higher reputation; in the War of 1812 he commanded a battalion of cavalry; in 1824, upon the visit of General Lafayette to N.Y., he was Marshall of the Day at Clermont; he was a Democrat of the Jeffersonian school; he was a lieutenant in the War of 1812, and was afterward commissioned as colonel of cavalry by Governor Tompkins."
