Captain William Bedell served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 1862 Mustered out: 1865 Side: Confederate Regiment(s): 1st Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
Captain William Bedell was a Prisoner of War during United States Civil War.
William married Emma H Porter (1848 - 1914) on 7 Sep 1865 in Galveston, Texas, United States. Their son was Robert Watson Bedell (1881 - 1956).
He enlisted as a First Sergeant in the 1st Regiment, Alabama Cavalry, and became a Prisoner of War as a Lieutenant, in 1864,[2], as one of the "Immortal 600"[3]
On August 20, 1864, 600 Confederate officers who were prisoners of war at Fort Delaware, were sent to the Union Army garrison at Hilton Head, South Carolina. Their mission was to be positioned in a stockade in front of Union cannons during the siege of Charleston. This was in response to 600 Union officers being imprisoned in Charleston who were subjected to direct fire from government artillery. The siege lasted until a yellow fever outbreak forced Confederate Major General S. Jones to evacuate the prisoners from the city limits. The surviving Confederate officers were then moved from the open stockade at Morris Island to Fort Pulaski by the federal authority. [4]
William died on 6 Nov 1913 in Galveston aged 72. [5] He is buried in Hempstead Cemetery, Hempstead, Waller County, Texas. [6]. [7]
