Biography

Thomas was born in London about 1628, after the 1627 marriage of his parents, Sir Thomas Bedingfield MP and Elizabeth Hoskins.[1] [2]

The records of Cambridge show him admitted as a Fellow-commoner to Christ's College, 1 November 1644, at the age of 16, and dying about 1684.[3] His father's Will, written in November 1659 refers to sons and daughters of my late deceased son.[4] Thus the sources that claim he lived until 1684 must be considered incorrect. The date is probably the death of his son, also Thomas Bedingfield.

On 14 May 1650,[5] he married Hanna Bacon, daughter of Philip Bacon of Woolverstone Suffolk. According to the November 1659 Will of Sir Thomas Bedingfield, her husband's father, [6] the marriage produced five children, of whom two appear to have died young:

Thomas - b. 1653
Elizabeth - b. 1651, m. William Grey
Philippa - b. 1655, d. 1685, m. John Rous Bt
Anthony - d. after 1659
Hanna -d. after 1659

It is probable that he was the Thomas Bedingfield Esq who was buried 16 May 1658 at St Gregory by Paul church in London.[7]

His widow Hanna married again in 1661.[8]

Research Notes

His father, Sir Thomas Bedingfield MP (bef.1593-1661) is reported[9] to have had one son, who died without issue. This without issue does not correspond with the Will of Sir Thomas ( see above ) which mentions sons and daughters of his late son. As the inheritance passed to two grand-daughters of Sir Thomas, (Elizabeth and Phillipa), then it must be that there were no surviving sons.

He is shown as the spouse of Hannah Bacon, daughter and heiress of Philip Bacon of Woolverstone. Their marriage was on 14 May 1650.[10]Hanna remarried in 1661 to Sir Philip Parker Bt., after the death of this Thomas Bedingfield. Hannah has been re-attached as a spouse of Thomas.
