Biography

Henry Beechey is Notable.

Henry William Beechey followed in his father's footsteps to become a painter. He was also an explorer. He was the son of renowned painter William Beechey and his first wife Mary Ann Jones, but was raised by his stepmother Lady Anne Beechey (nee Jessop). His mother had died when he was still a young child.

His knowledge of antiquities, gained partly through his travels and involvement in archaeological excavation in Egypt, resulted in an appointment by Earl Bathurst. He accompanied his brother, Captain Frederick William Beechey on a survey of the coast-line from Tripoli to Derna. The brothers' journal of their expedition was liberally illustrated by Henry. The edited journal was published in 1828. In the meantime Henry had been made a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1825.

In 1834 Henry married Harriet Eyres in London. He would have been about 45 years old.

Henry Beechey migrated from England to New Zealand.

In 1851 Henry emigrated to New Zealand, where he was to live out the rest of his life. The Electoral rolls show his occupation as "Gentleman" and he was also listed on successive years of Jury lists in the Colony. Joining him in New Zealand were two of his nephews: Frederick William Stapleton Beechey and George Duncan Beechey.

Henry died at the age of 73 at his residence in Governors Bay.
