Biography

Maria Louise Beene is the daughter of Jesse Beene and Maria Rhoda Evans. ^[1] Maria named her first son "Jesse Beene Winston" in honor of her father. There is a letter from Jesse to Maria that was published in the periodical, "The Beanstalk" in Volume 15, no. 1 (Fall 1986). It has been microfilmed and a copy may be ordered from the Church of the Latter Day Saints, here: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/2378871

On March 27, 1830, in Green County, Tennessee, Maria married William Overton Winston. Maria and William resided in DeKalb County, Alabama, where her husband was President of the Wills Valley Railroad, a representative to the Alabama State Legislature and owner of a large agricultural estate, in Valley Head, Alabama known as "Winston Place." After his death in 1871, the estate with it's Colonial Revival house passed to their daughter, Maria Louise Winston and her husband, Benjamin F. Paine. ^[2]

Maria and William are found on the United States Censes of 1850, living in DeKalb county, Alabama. ^[3]

Maria died March 2, 1891, in Valley Head, DeKalb County, Alabama and is buried in the Winston Memorial cemetery, in Haleyville, Winston county, Alabama.

Researcher's Notes

Clan MacBean in North America, Volume II, Fifth Edition, Revised 1993, by Joseph S. Bean, page 440 gives her year of birth as 1822, while her Find A Grave memorial gives her date of birth as July 26, 1812. ^[5] Since she was married in 1830, the year of birth as 1822 is not practical.
