Born at Brackendale Farm, near Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England, he was the 2nd of 4 children born to William Beet and Elizabeth Churchill. Harry's birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1875 in the Bingham district and his mother's maiden name was: Churchill.[1] Their family lived in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England.[2]
On the 1891 census, Harry (36 and a baker) and his family were living in Kettering, Northamptonshire.[3] On February 18, 1892, he enlisted with the Sherwood Foresters, and sailed for India in January 1894, where he served on the Punjab Frontier from 1897 & 1898. It was during his service of the South African War of 1899-1902 that he won the Victoria Cross. He promoted from Corporal to Sergeant by Lord Kitchener for service in the field, April 4, 1900.
At Wakkerstroom, on the 22nd April, 1900, No. 2 Mounted Infantry Company, 1st Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, with two squadrons, Imperial Yeomanry, had to retire from near a farm, under a ridge held by Boers. Corporal Burnett, Imperial Yeomanry, was left on the ground wounded, and Corporal Beet, on seeing him, remained behind and placed him under cover, bound up his wounds, and by firing prevented the Boers from coming down to the farm till dark, when Doctor Wilson, Imperial Yeomanry, came to the wounded man's assistance. The retirement was carried out under a very heavy fire, and Corporal Beet was exposed to fire during the whole afternoon. The London Gazette, 12 Feb 1901, Issue 27283, pg 1059
He married Annie Elizabeth Brown[4] (date unknown) and emigrated to Canada in 1906,[5] living in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and finally, British Columbia.
In 1911 and 1916, their family was living in Battleford, Saskatchewan.[5][6]
Harry served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War.[7]
Harry died in Vancouver, British Columbia on 10 Jan 1946.[4] He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, British Columbia.[8]
