Biography

George was born about 1770, estimated from age at 1851 census and death.

He married Mary Mycock on 9 June 1794 at Alstonfield, Staffordshire. Marriage by banns, both of that parish, bachelor and spinster. Both marked, witnesses Samuel Belfield and Henry Wood.[1]

In the 1841 census George is listed as a farmer, of Gosling Green, Fawfieldhead township, living with Mary aged 65 or over, sons Joseph and George, and Mary 15 or over (Mary Ann his granddaughter, the illegitimate child of his daughter Lydia).[2] The 1851 census shows them all still at Gosling Green. George is a farmer of 11 acres, his sons agricultural labourers, and Mary Ann a silk button coverer. Son George is a clogger as well as agricultural labourer.[3]

George died in 1853[4] and was buried on 19 November 1853 at Longnor: George Belfield, Gosling Green, 83 years.[5]
