In 1961, Lois became the first black female radio announcer in Greensboro at WEAL Radio. She was affectionately known as “Miss K”.
She was a founder and first director of the campus radio station WANT, now WNAA 90.1 at North Carolina A&T State University. Prior to her radio career in Greensboro, she was associated with radio station WERD and WAOK in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her Federal Communication license (FCC) from Atlanta, GA. Dr. Kinney was the recipient of the University “Teacher of the Year Award” in 1984 and currently has a scholarship in her name to be awarded to students studying Mass Communications and Journalism at NC A&T.
