Biography

Alice Irene Benight, daughter of Guy William Benight and Letta Rae Johnson, was born on the 21st October 1916 in Fort Peck, McCone, Montana.[1] She was Christened in July 1930 in Salem, Marion, Oregon.

Alice married Lester Charles (Charlie) Henion on the 30th January 1936 on the Benight Farm in Albany, Linn, Oregon. To this union would be born two children;

Alice passed away on the 23rd April 2014 in Jefferson, Marion, Oregon.[1]

My mother was born on the ranch that her father, mother, uncle, and grandmother homesteaded. The ranch was located on the Fort Peck Indian reservation. The ranch had 960 acres. They came in 1915 and returned to the Black Dog area of Linn County Oregon in 1923.

They left in two covered and their mothers small spring wagon, 26 head of horses, two children, Alice, 5, and her brother Ray, 8. The journey began on June 23 and ended 3 month later in September. Grandma Mary Elizabeth Jackson (Alice's paternal grandmother) was 83 years of age at the start. After 3 days into the journey "grandma Jackson" took quick pneumonia and passed away around midnight on about June 26, 1923.

Letta, Alice's mother, then left the family to take Grandma's body by train to Albany, Or. for burial. Letta, joined the family some two months later in Twin Falls Idaho. Near the Oregon border the family drank alkali water. This occurred quite by accident as they believed they were beyond the "Alkali Country". Alice got deathly sick, turning mildly purple and bloating. This brought the trek to a halt for two to three days while Alice was recovering.

The family upon reaching Oregon came the Perl Leverich farm in the Black Dog area. After farming the Leverich ranch for several years they purchased a 60 acre farm from a Mr. Skelton, about 1/2 mile to the south in the Black Dog area. Alice was about 12 years of age at this time and lived there until her marriage to Charles on January 30, 1935.
