Research Notes

Military records show that Young was captured Jun 21, 1864 at Elk Creek, Tennessee By Maj. Gen. W. T. Sherman's forces. They further show at age 18 on Jul 31, 1864 Young was sent to USA Gen'l Hosp., Louisville, Ky from Military Prison for Measles. He was returned to prison Aug 21, 1864.

Excerpt from History of My Bennett Ancestors: by Mrs. R. T. Messer (Herma Jarrett) Young Amanual Bennett was close to 15 years old when the war started. He remained at home till after the house was burned. Then Kirk and his raiders came to the cabin where the Bennetts were living, early one winter morning. Grandfather Young was out looking after a cow they had managed to keep hidden. He saw them and made himself scarce, not thinking that they would harm his 17-year-old son. They tied Amanual and took him with them, claiming he was a Confederate on furlough. They took him out on Mt. Sterling. There they met another bunch of their men. They talked awhile and decided to turn back and make a raid on Jonathans Creek. Kirk called two of his men over and told them to take Bennett to Chattanooga and overtake him in one hour. I have heard Uncle Mann tell the story many times. He thought they were going to kill him. That is perhaps what Kirk intended, for he hated Grandfather very much. But the two men evidently didn't want to murder a boy. They took him some distance around a turn in the road. They stopped, and one of the men asked him if he was a good hand to run. He replied, "If you will untie me, I will show you." One of the men got off his horse and untied him and told him to go. As he ran, they both fired their guns. He said he heard the bullets whistle, but they did not strike him. He says he returned home through the woods and found the family frantic with grief, which turned to joy. (Note: Young Amanual was born in January 1846, which would make him 14 when the war broke out, 18 when the house was burned in 1864. I believe this story may have occurred before the house was burned, rather than after. Or, I have the wrong date for the house burning. CBM)

It may be well to pause here and tell why Kirk hated Great-Grandpa so much. The road coming down into Cataloochee Valley came around the side of a mountain just across the creek from Grandpa's home, and travellers on this road could be seen and heard for a good ways. If Kirk's men were coming, the news had a way of preceding them up the creek. Soldiers home on furlough, horses, and cattle disappeared. On one occasion, they heard a band of riders coming in late at night, and Aunt Sophronia was the only one to carry the news. Their horses had long ago been taken by Kirk, so she was running as fast as she could. She was about a half mile below Fayette Palmer's house when Kirk's men saw her and began shooting. She dodged into some woods with the bullets cracking the limbs all about her. She returned home, knowing the sound of the shooting had carried the message she was trying to take. Well, after Uncle Mann's experience with Kirk, the family decided that he would be safer in the army than at home. So he came to Waynesville and volunteered. He was sent to Camp Patton at Asheville and was there when the war closed a few weeks later. Some years after the war, he married Jane Rogers, daughter of Matthew Rogers. They settled on Fines Creek, stayed here till about 1897, then moved to Pacolet, S. C. These are their children: Dockie, Judge, Robert, David, Ava, Charles, James, Emma (Dollie - nickname for Emma), George, and Fannie. Aunt Jane died at Pacolet. A few years later Uncle Mann married again. He and his wife moved to Fries, Virginia, taking Fannie with them. There were some children by this wife. I know nothing of them. Uncle Mann died at Fries in his 97th year. Fannie was in Virginia the last I heard of her. Dockie married Harry Terrell. They lived at Clyde and have been dead a good while. They left three children, Edith, Annie, and Edward. Dollie married a Smyth of Columbia, S. C. He died, leaving her with a small daughter, Ava. Dollie came to Charlotte to visit my sister, Jalie Danner, while she was sick. She stayed and helped to care for her till she died. Later she married her husband, C. M. Danner. They have two children, Woodrow and Ruth. James Bennett was an ordained minister of the Methodist church. He died young, unmarried. George Bennett was in Haywood on a visit about five years ago. He was living in Greenville, S. C. He said David was living near Spartanburg, S. C., and Ava, now Mrs. Henry Tony, was a widow living with some of her children at Raleigh, N. C. The others were all dead, leaving families scattered all over.
