Benjamin Jordan Bennett was named for his grandfather, Benjamin Bennett, who was born in Ohio, and was a very early settler of the Territory.
Benjamin Jordan Bennett was born in Perry Township, Clay County, Indiana, the son of Robert Bennett and Talitha Laycock, who were pioneer settlers of Clay County. Robert, born in Indiana in 1813, and reared in Ohio, bought a tract of canal land at $3.12 per acre in what would become Clay County, cleared it and built a house and barn. In 1871 the Bennett family moved to Terre Haute for the children’s education. After three years, they returned to their farm in Perry Township. Robert died there in 1890. His wife, Talitha was born in Clermont, Ohio in 1816, a daughter of Reuben Laycock. She died in 1874, leaving her husband and eight children. Robert married Mrs. Margaret Dunham (the widow of Abijah Durham).
After his mother’s death, Benjamin, 11, went to live with his brother, Scott. Benjamin married Viola Parker in 1881. Her parents were pioneer settlers of Cass Township. Benjamin and Viola moved to Clay City, Indiana in 1906.[1]
