Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Judah Benton was a North Carolina colonist.

Judah, sometimes called Judith, was born about 1725, possibly in Chowan, North Carolina, the daughter of John Benton. She is named as daughter Judith Raby in her father's 1748/49 Chowan will. [1]

She married Adam Raby 30 Sep 1748 in Chowan, North Carolina. [2]

Children: from the probate of Adam and Judah; dates are approximate

  1. Adam Jr (1750-1777) died while serving in the Revolutionary War
  2. Orpha (1755- ) married Jacob Dempsey HARRELL
  3. Ruth (1759-1818) married Hardy HAYES
  4. Luke (1761-1789) married widow Hester HARRELL

Her husband, Adam Raby, made his will 5 Oct 1765, proved Aug 1766, in Bertie, North Carolina (Bk A, p.71-3). His will names his wife Judah and sons Luke and Adam Raby . It also specifies certain conditions for division among "all my children." [3]

Judah Benton Raby died about 1785 as evidenced from the following deposition in which Dempsey (Orpha) HARRELL and James (Ruth) HAYES requested their share of the estate of Adam RABY Sr and their brother, Adam RABY Jr. [4]

Nov. 1789 Bertie Co NC; Deposition by DEMPSEY HARRELL and wife ORPHA, and JAMES HAYES and wife RUTH, stating the dec'd was the father of the said ORPAH and RUTH, and died "about twenty-four years ago," testate, bequeathing all his property to his wife JUDY RABY for her lifetime with reversion to her children.
The said JUDY died "about four years ago," intestate, and LUKE RABY [son of the said ADAM] took all the estate into possession and kept it until he died. Record also shows that the said ADAM left another son, ADAM RABY Jr, who died in 1777 unmarried and without issue, in the service of his country, and the estate which would have fallen to him was also in the possession of the said LUKE. LUKE RABY died in 1789, testate, and his wife HESTER was his executrix.
