Orphaned at 10, he was sent out to India to join the East India Company, where he rose to serve as Governor of Fort St George, Madras, from 1735 to 1744 and married and buried two wives. He returned to England with a large fortune, married an heiress Mary Tyssen in 1745 and purchased Gidea Hall in Essex. He had one son, Richard. He died in 1774 and is buried at Margaretting, Essex. His descendants later inherited Englesfield House in Berkshire and live there to this day.
