Biography

By Donald Smith Doris Martha Bergman was born in the small town of Lake Orion, Michigan on July 13, 1924. Her father William Bergman was from German roots, mostly immigrating in the 1860s. Her mother Lucille Barnes has lines back to early colonial times including at least ten documented DAR patriots.

Through her schooling, she earned 'Honor Roll' awards many times, and was also chosen as 'Miss Lake Orion' in 1941. She graduated from Lake Orion High School in 1942, and married Arthur Leon Smith in 1943 while he was in Pilot Training in South Carolina.

She had two sons almost 8 years apart. The first, Arthur William was born in 1944 while her husband was missing in action (in prison camp). She supported her husband Arthur as a secretary while he attended College. She had Donald Wayne in 1952 the same year her husband completed Dental school. The family oved from MI to Westchester, CA in 1956, She and Arthur separated in 1960 and she went back to work as a secretary, attaing the position of Senior Legal Secretary in Los Angeles District Attorney's office.

She remarried Paul DeKonty in 1961 and moved to Norwalk CA, then briefly to Lake Elsinore CA. The marriage did not last long, and she moved back to Los Angeles.

She remarried Fritz H. Eggert in 1970 and they purchased a new house in Mission Viejo, CA. They had a wonderful, loving relationship. She kept an IBM Selectric typewriter in her home office while Fritz worked as an engineer for local factories. Fritz retired and they moved to ZepherHills, FL about 1988 after her mother Lucille passed away. She died there in 1993 and is buried in Brookville, Pasco, FL.
