Biography

Dagny Lovisa Bergstedt was born 23 June 1901, the 12th of 13 children in her family. Her father, Johan Henrik Bergstedt had two children from his first wife who died young, and then had 11 more children with Dagny's mother, Charlotte Marie Mathiasson. Dagny's mother suffered from depression and took her own life when Dagny was just 8 years old. Their family lived on the little island of Hisoy off the coast of Arendal, Norway. In 1921, shortly after her conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints she emigrated to America where a few of her siblings had already immigrated. When she first arrived she worked for a time in the Chicago, IL area for a wealthy family as a domestic servant, and then made her way to Salt Lake City where her sister Borghild was living. It was in SLC, at Norwegian socials that she met and was courted by C Fred Schade who was 25 years her senior. Dagny's family had serious concerns about Fred and their age difference, but Dagny and Fred married on 9 July 1933. They moved to Portland Oregon within a year, which Dagny had fallen in love with when they visited on their honeymoon, as the Pacific Northwest reminded her of Norway. Fred and Dagny had three sons, Fred B., John, and David. Dagny was known for her thriftiness, her cooking, friendliness and her sense of humor. She was famous for making fritters, Norwegian Meatcakes, and many Norwegian desserts and treats. She and Fred worked for many years as caretakers of the beautiful church building on SE 30th & Harrison in Portland, and also worked in the Portland Mission Headquarters/Home. Dagny loved her grandchildren , who she always welcomed and cared for as needed. She passed away on 10 December 1969 in her home and was buried in her husband's hometown in Huntsville, Utah beside him.
