Pierre Berteau, son of Francois Berteau and Louise Ernaudine,[2] was born about 1739[3] in Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, France,[2] predating the Acadian deportations to that location. Critical information is missing from the time of his birth to the time his name appears on the Wall of Names in St. Martinville, Louisiana with the Acadians, as an early arrival to Louisiana, on Plaque 1 Right. He is listed alone as head of his own household.[4]

He is recorded in Louisiana early enough to have been a member of the Beausoleil party, arriving from Halifax via St. Domingue c.1765. He was counted in the census of 8 April 1766 in Cabahannocer, St. James, Louisiana with a woman, a child, and one slave.[5]

However, as Steven Cormier explains on his website, Acadians in Gray:

Spanish officials counted Pierre, son of François Berteau and Louise Ernaudine of Nantes, France, at Cabahannocer on the river above New Orleans in April 1766. In his household lived a woman, a girl, and one slave. Pierre remained at Cabahannocer and remarried to two Acadians from the Savoie and Bourgeois families there. His being at Cabahannocer in April 1766 implies that he was an Acadian who had come to Louisiana with 600 other exiles from Halifax via Cap-Français, St.-Domingue, in 1765. However, when one considers his birth at Nantes in c1738 (based on the age given in the Cabahannocer census of January 1777), one suspects that he was a French immigrant, not an Acadian, who chose to live away from the bustle of New Orleans.[6]

He officially married Acadian Rosalie Savoie on 25 August 1766 at Cabahannocer, St. James, Louisiana.[7][8][9]

Known children of the marriage:
  1. Francoise Berteau (c.1766)
  2. Jean Charles Berteau (c.1768)
  3. Joseph Berteau (c.1772)
  4. Marie Berteau (1773)[10]
  5. Marie Margueritte Berteau (1775)[11]
  6. Elisabeth Berteau (c.1776)
  7. Anne Berteau (1778)[12]
  8. Pierre Berteau (1781)[13]

He served in the Louisiana Militia in 1770 along the Acadian Coast of the Mississippi River in Louisiana. By then he was 29. [14]

By January of 1777, still in Cabahannocer (St. James, Louisiana), he and Rosalie had six children.[3] On 5 May 1782 at St. James, Louisiana, Pierre was listed as one of the buyers at the sale of property and effects of estate of the late Michel Gaudin.[15]

Rosalie died, and Pierre married a second time, to Magdalena Bourgeois, widow of Josef Terriot, on 22 November 1796.[2][16] No known children.

They were counted on the census of 1810 in St. James, Louisiana. [17]

He died, probably the day before he was buried on August 10, 1813 at Convent, St. James, Louisiana.[18][19]

Research Notes

  • There is some confusion as from where, when, and why he immigrated to Louisiana. From the comments, KTR seems to have some information, but the link and/or citation are not included. With a record showing him married in Louisiana in 1766, readers can only assume that he arrived at the Beausoleil party c.1765. An earlier arrival date could mean a unique history.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Pierre by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Pierre:

I can see removing the Acadian tag from him. He seems to be an exception for the reasons pointed out by Cindy--my lapse. Normally, we include people who married Acadians but Pierre married Acadian women in Louisiana not Acadie or France. Had he been married to an Acadian before immigrating that would be a different story imo. Can't say why he's on the wall of names but he is listed among the early arrivals and didn't come over on one of the 7 ships. He married first in 1766 in Louisiana--the ships didn't arrive until 1785. The W of N has him born in Acadia. https://www.acadianmemorial.org/ensemble_encore2/record_detail.php?id=1323

Wait, Cindy, are you saying he arrived in Louisiana in 1782? Where is that, and the note from KTR that you mention? Was there a link to KTR's page on him? (There are two other missing sources in the biography as well.) Are y'all saying he came from France to Louisiana and not first to Acadia? I assumed from what is in the biography that he either came from Acadia with the Beausoleil party in c.1765 or with the freed eastern seaboard Acadians, c.1767. I'll rewrite, but some sources are needed. I'll check the changes to see if they're there.

This is probably from "Histoire et Généalogie des Acadiens"; Bona Arsenault; Montreal: Lemeac, 1978, 6 vols. Note: Vols. 2-6 contain genealogies by area, paged continuously;

Joyce has a copy.

Jackie, you are correct, #S195 p. 2423 is from Bona Arsenault's Histoire. It does not state when or where he married Rosalie Savoie. The quoted text is not actually a quote, it is an English translation of the original French text.

Citation: Bona Arsenault, Histoire et Généalogie des Acadiens (Montreal: Lemeac, 1978), 6 volumes, in French; vol. 6 (Louisiane), p. 2423.

Let me know if you want to cite the exact French text.

Berteaud-5 and Berteau-3 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same birth year and place. Same spouse (also needs a merge). Same death date and place. One child same (also needs a merge).

Is he given the Acadian project box because he is on the Wall of Names? How does he get on the Wall of Names without any Acadian birth, marriage or death? KTR questions that he has a dit name Beausoleil since he was not an Acadian (see her note on the May 5, 1782 entry. Is it because he married two Acadian women even though he doesn't appear to have lived there himself?

Has anyone checked the Halifax prisoners lists? He shows up on Louisiana records in 1765, which is when the first Beausoleil ship arrived....

I did check the lists posted on Acadian and French Canadian Family Home for Halifax, Fort Edward and Fort Beausejour, and did not find him-- but not sure if those lists are complete.

Berteaud-3 and Berteau-3 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same men. Sorry, WikiTree didn't find Berteau as a match for Berteaud. I tried several variants.
