It was this child that we came to know, years later as grandmother. As a little girl she was called Anna Gfellar. She grew up in a small village made up of farmers. Her brothers and sisters, Fred, John, Maria, Elsie, Catherine, and Rosina, never left Switzerland. When Anna was around 21 years of age, she was married to Benedict Zoss. Anna and Benedict spent the early years of their married life in farming. The large family of children born to them were baptized in the Lutheran faith. Eight of the children grew to manhood and womanhood.

Later Benedict moved his family to Ostermundigen, a suburb of the city of Bern, where he had purchased a stone quarry. He lived here until his death some years later.

It was it in about 1885 that grandmother made plans to go to America. Her daughter, Elizabeth had gone a few years before. So, with Anna, Mary, Lena, Ben, and Adolf, she left her beloved Switzerland and came to Roanoke, Illinois. There she lived with Elizabeth, her children found work in various homes, after about three years she started keeping house for bag. She stayed with him for eight years. When he moved to Iowa she lived with her daughter, Mary Bill. Later she accompanied her daughter Anna Reeb to Nebraska. She lived with Anna and her family until her death. After her death she spent the winter in Indiana with her daughter Rosina Bohn. In the spring she went to near Roanoke, Illinois. There she made her home with Lena Roth her youngest daughter. She remained with her until she died on November 27, 1920. She was past 89 years old when she died. She accepted the Mennonite faith soon after she came to Roanoke. Religion was very real and practical to her and her faith in God sustained her throughout her life. We as a group owe much to her. We can never forget that it is due to grandmother that we are now living in this great country of America. I shall continue now with a very brief history of the each of the eight children.

The eldest child was Elizabeth who was born at May 18, 1854. She married Gottfred Bill August 4, 1873. He was a young carpenter but later helped to operate the stone quarry. 10 years later on March 16, 1883, the couple with their four children; Alice, Fred, Gottfred, and Emma set sail for America. Gottfred's brother Gottlieb had crossed over three years before and Gottfred hoped to better his fortune in the new land. Although Elizabeth sadly left all her relatives and friends behind she yet turned hopefully to the West. The family arrived at Roanoke on April 1. They established a home on a farm near Roanoke. One of the sad moments of their life in America came when little nine-year-old Emma lost her life when she was fatally burned in a fire in a field. Elizabeth died on October 2, 1928 at the age of 74 years. Her husband died about five years later on December 4, 1933 at the age of 89. They left the following children: Alice Beer, Mary Mischler, Adolf, and Hulda, Roanoke, Fred and Gottfred, Iowa Herman, Mazon, Ben, El Paso, Lewis and Walter, Chicago. Fred, the next child was born on March 21, 1865. He learned the trade of making wagons. After he had worked at this trade for a number of years he joined his father in quarrying stone. In 1887 at Ostermundigen he married Mary Brechbuhl. About a year after their marriage they decided to migrate to America where his mother and all his brothers and sisters excepting one Rosina were already located, their destination was Roanoke. And upon their arrival they both worked for a farmer Peter Kennel, Fred in the fields and Mary in the home. Their home was in a summer kitchen where they cooked and slept. After years of hard work they acquired the farm upon which Mary still lives. Fred died suddenly of a heart attack on May 14, 1927 at the age of 62 years. All his children live on farms near their old home. They are Fred and Chris, Lowpoint, Anna Krabs, Pekin, Lena Kennell, and Elmer Washburn Martha Hostetler, Ray and Harold, Roanoke and Bennie.

The third child Anna was born August 27, 1859.
