August was born in Germany to John Binger and Lisette Kuhlman. He came to America in 1870 with his mother and four siblings: Charles, Lizzie, Lena and Herman. They moved to Morrisonville, Wisconsin. While there, George, twins Henry and Ernest, Gertrude and Theodore "Pete" were born. Two children died in infancy.
In 1882 August took up homestead and planted a tree claim one mile north of what is now Tulare, SD. This was his home unitl he retired in 1926.
In a double ceremony with brother Charles and Hattie, he married Nannie Bell at the Foster House in Redfield, Oct 1883. They had 12 children. seven boys and five girls.
