Willie E. (Black) Duke is a part of US Black heritage.

Wife, mother and grandmother of Notables: Jesse C. Duke Charles S. Duke, and Geraldine McCullough.

Willie was born in 1861 to Lucinda Black. She passed away in 1941.

In 1870, Willie Black 14 was living in Demopolis, Marengo, Alabama with Lucinda Black 51, a seamstress, and Watkin Black 18, a farm laborer. [1]

On 10 Jan 1878, Willie A. (sic) Black married Jesse C. Duke in Selma, Dallas, Alabama.[2]

By 1880, they were living in Selma, Dallas, Alabama with son Charles S. 10/12. Jesse was a grocer.[3]

In 1887, Willie Duke and her family had to leave Alabama, because her husband had started a newspaper in 1886, and written an editorial that scandalized the White population, who called for his death.

By 1900, Willie Duke (coded Dukes) 41 lived in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, Arkansas with husband Jesse Duke 45, newspaper editor, and the four younger children: Edward 17, Thomas 13, Esther 10, and Harvey 7.[4]

In 1910, Willia E Duke 52 lived in Pine Bluff with Jesse Duke 55, a rural school teacher, and children Edward E. 26, Esther P. 20, and Harrison R. 17.[5]

Son Charles Sumner Duke removed to Chicago, Cook, Illinois by 1910, and daughter Esther P. Duke Hamilton moved there before 1920.

Jesse C. Duke 62 died on Jan 23, 1916 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.[6] and was buried in Bellwood Cemetery, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.[7]

On 31 Jan 1916, Willie E. Duke filed for a widow's pension based on her husband's military service in the 7th US Volunteer Infantry.[8]

In 1930, Willie E Duke 67 was living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois with her daughter, Esther P. Hamilton 37, and six grandchildren.[9]

In 1940, Willie Duke 78 was living in Chicago with Hugh Hamilton 45 and Ester Hamilton 50, three grandchildren, and three Hamilton relatives.[10]

Willie E. Duke died on 24 Oct 1941 in Cook, Illinois.[11]

She was buried in Bellwood Cemetery, Pine Bluff, Jefferson, Arkansas.[12]
