Agnes was born at Bishopscourt, Naas, County Kildare, Ireland on 24 January 1875.[1][2][3][4] She was the daughter of Mary Isabella Blackstock. Her father is unknown and it is presumed that she was born out of wedlock. (See research notes below.)
At age 6, in 1881, she was living with her grandparents, George and Agnes Blackstock, at Dumbuck Lodge in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.[5]
She married James Snowdowne on 1 Feb 1895 at Dumbuck Lodge in the parish of Old Kilpatrick in Dumbarton, Scotland.[6]
Agnes and James moved from Scotland to South Africa in 1897/98.
She passed away in December 1924 in Judith's Paarl, Johannesburg, South Africa.[7]
Research notes
Birth: Agnes' mother, Mary, was living and working in Scotland prior to the birth of Agnes in Ireland. No father is listed in any birth or baptism records, so one assumes that Agnes was born out of wedlock, and that perhaps Mary was sent to Ireland to have the baby.
Middle name - Hutchieson: When Agnes was living with her grandparents in 1881, her name appears on the census as Agnes Hutchieson. Later in life, it is used as a middle name - for example, we see it on her marriage certificate - and it is even passed down to one of her children. Many theories exist as to why this name persists - a probable one being that it may be the surname of her birth father.
