Biography
Mary was born about 1728 in Belfast in County Antrim. She met Samuel Mears (Mairs) and they married sometime in the 1740’s in Belfast. Mary and Samuel emigrated to Pennsylvania shortly after they were married and settled in Martic TWP in Lancaster County by 1750. They had either 4 or 6 children, all born in Lancaster Co in Pennsylvania Mary Blair ... [1]
Mary is thought to be a sister of Capt Thomas and William Blair, who were natives of Scotland. Thomas Blair became a captain during the French and War; William was killed in an Indian attack. The text dwells a bit on Thomas, saying that he died 9-10-1808 and that his son John who died 1-1-1832 was the namesake for Blair Co. PA.
The book: "Churches of the Valley" by Alfred Nevins is also named "Or, an Historical Sketch of the Old Presbyterian Congregations of Cumberland and Franklin Counties, in Pennsylvania". The name, Samuel Mairs is listed as one of the oldest elders in the Upper Church in the chapter, "Path Valley Churches". Other names that are included in this chapter are Holliday, Morrow, McCurdy, Walker, Patterson, Maclay, Elliott, Blair, Armstrong, and many others. They characterize this area of Pennsylvania as being primarily inhabited by Scots Irish families from Ulster.
Mary and Samuel’s children were: Samuel, Jr who became had of the family after his father, Samuel died—Mary relied greatly upon him; James m Mary Baer; John m Anne Baldridge; Sarah m James Moore; Jane; and David. Mary’s 3 older sons: Samuel , Jr, James, and John fought in the Revolutionary War.
Blair is a repeated middle name for male Mears descendants. Examples are: John Blair Mears is a son of John Mears (son of Samuel & Mary); another one of John Mears’s sons, David Mears, named one of his sons, John Blair Mears. John Blair Mears named one of his sons, Francis Blair Mears.
