Maria Rosina was born about 1834. Maria Rosina Blanchard ... She passed away about 1920.[1]
She emigrated to Australia in 1851, growing up in Landport, part of the great harbour of Portsmouth. Her ancestors there had probably seen the First Fleet set out in May 1787 to found the colony of New South Wales, perhaps planting seeds of a dream that one of their own would follow to Australia in years to come.
She was one of the 'Beulah Girls' emigrating on the 20th May 1851 from Portsmouth, Plymouth on The Beulah, with 203 souls, nearly all young single women destined for domestic service in Van Diemen's Land, arriving at Hobart Town on the 29th August. The Hampshire Telegraph reported 'the conduct of the emigrants on the voyage is reported as having been remarkably good, especially that of the single girls.' The single girls included 158 Irish girls from orphanages (one died on the voyage).
Most of the girls were form Irish workhouses, but 11 were from Portsmouth.
Maria was hired on 8th September by Captain French but changed to Dr Grant of Launceston on the 13th September. 12 pounds per annum for 3 months.
