Biography

This profile is part of the Blanchard Name Study.

Daniel Blanchard was born in 1798, son of James Blanchard and his wife Phebe. Daniel was explicitly named in his father's Will, as one of the younger children, his older brother Benjamin being the Executor. Daniel's exact birth date is recorded on his grave marker - see FindAGrave citation below. He is believed to have been born in Walden, Vermont, where his parents moved the family in about 1787 (then part of Cabot, Vt.) and where his father was recorded on the 1790 and 1800 censuses. The family home before that had been Canterbury, NH. The 1861 census referenced below, indicates he was born in NH, which could be explained if his mother was back and forth between Vermont and NH in this period. Or, more likely, that census was not correct in this regard. After all, his older sister "Mercy" was recorded as the second baby ever born in Cabot, Vermont, and this was ten years before Daniel's arrival.

When around ten years old, Daniel would have moved along with his family to Potton in Lower Canada. They are believed to have remained there for about five years (1807-1812) before retreating to the Chazy, New York area, almost certainly on account of the War of 1812, with his older brother Benjamin serving on the U.S. side. While his father passed away while still in New York state (1817), Daniel with his mother, step-father (Josiah Folsom) and siblings returned to Lower Canada soon thereafter, likely 1820 as recorded on the 1842 census referenced below. Daniel was recorded on the 1825 Potton census, directly beside his brother Ephraim.[1] His brother Benjamin may have settled for a short while in nearby Hemmingford, where their step-father Josiah Folsom was listed on the 1825 census.

Daniel married Hannah Bourn in about 1820-21. Hannah was the daughter of Rev. Roswell Bourn and his wife Hannah Jarvis, who lived right next door on the 1825 census referenced above. The marriage date is an estimate based on the ages of Daniel and Hannah, together with the fact they counted three children (under 5) on the 1825 census.

On the 1842 census,[2] Daniel and his wife are recorded with 11 children, all born in Canada (10 boys, 1 girl).

Based on the two censuses above, together with other available records,[3] the following are the known children of Daniel and Hannah. It is probable based on the 1842 census that there were 1 or 2 more:

  1. Unnamed Female, b. abt. 1821; prob. died young
  2. George, b. abt 1823; m. Esther Keyes; d. unk. (certainly before 1913)
  3. Phoebe, b. 24 Sept. 1825; m. Elanthan Bourne, 10 Sept. 1840; moved to Colton, NY; d. 22 Sept. 1913 (Colby, Wisconsin)
  4. Lephy, b. 24 Aug. 1827; m. John Miller Kinne; d. 3 July 1902
  5. Tristan C., b. 7 Sept. 1828; m. Catherine W. Courser, 5 July 1823; d. 1909
  6. Judson Daniel, b. 24 Sept. 1830; m1. Malvina Blanchard, 18 March 1851; m2. Rosalia Emma Bowen, 4 July 1870; m3. Matilda Scott; d. 1 March 1919
  7. Alfred N., b. 13 Jan. 1833; m1. Martha Bresee, 28 Oct. 1851; m2. Mary Allen, 10 Jan. 1857; d. 9 Feb. 1910
  8. Carley J., b. March 1836; d. 1919
  9. Roswell; b. abt. 1838; m. Mary J. Ladd, 4 Jan. 1858; d. unk. (certainly before 1913)
  10. Horace Jones, b. 18 Nov 1839; m1. Mary Jane Abel, 29 Jul. 1858; moved to Colby, Wisconsin; m2. Emilie Bricker, 30 March 1876; d. 8 June 1921
  11. Sarah, b. April 1843; m. Henry W. Abel, 15 July 1858; d. 7 March 1906, and
  12. John Wesley, b. 1 Dec. 1843; m. Emma Burdick; d. 30 March 1921.

Note that Carley J. is an addition to the normally recognized children list thanks to sister Phoebe's Obituary (refer to his and her profiles).

By the time of the 1861 census, all Daniel and Hannah's children had moved along, except for Horace and John Wesley. Horace's wife and two young children were also part of the household.[4] On the 1871 census, Daniel and Hannah, always in Potton, were continuing to host the wife and child of son Horace. While Horace is listed on the census, it has been learned that he had moved west to Wisconsin in about 1862, and the fact he is listed on the census below his wife's name, may have been a subtle hint (repeated again on the 1881 census) or wishful thinking that he would be returning.[5] He did not return, other than a visit in 1910 after Mary Jane had passed.

By the 1881 census, Daniel and Hannah lived alone.[6]

Daniel passed away in 1884, at the age of 85[7] and was interred in Mansonville Protestant Cemetery.[8] There is a discrepancy between the Church record, giving a death date of 28 April 1884 and a burial of 1 May 1884, as compared to the grave marker i.e. 22 Sept. 1884. Hannah would outlive him by about 9 years, having moved in for her final years with their son Judson.

Thanks for your comment. I believe that Blanchard-2453 is a mix of two different Daniel Blanchard's, one being Blanchard-4879. However, the siblings listed on Blanchard-2453 do not for the most part match Blanchard-4879 and do not correlate with the children listed on James Blanchard's will. Therefore it would be wrong to merge the two Daniels and more work is needed.

Blanchard - 4879 and Blanchard 2453 both David Blanchards, same birth and death dates but different parents and siblings. I suspect though that this might be one person.
