Biography

From Ireland to Canada and the States, the name Blean/Blaine was spelled in a variety of ways. In this case, daughter Elizabeth (Mrs. Thomas Hunt) spelled the name of Ann's father as "John Blane," when she was an informant for her mother's death. However, when Elizabeth herself died, her daughter, Rebecca (Mrs. Philip Breen), spelled the name of Elizabeth's mother as Anna Blaine.

Anne arrived later in Canada than her siblings. In June 1865 she traveled on the ship United Kingdom with her children James (19), Eliza (16), John (19), Anne (8) and Isaac (6). Ann's age was listed as 45 which does not match the information on her death certificate. Another child, Joseph, arrived in 1871 on the St. David.

Ann's death information says that she had given birth to nine children but only six have been found so far. Ann was a widow when she arrived in Canada and the name of her husband was either John or James Clarke.

In 1871, Anne can be seen on the Canadian census in Middlesex West, Ontario, with her children: James (25); John (19); Joseph (17); Ann (14); Isaac (12). Her age is 55. James, John and Joseph are farmers. Next door is brother Alexander "Blean" and son Joseph (10). Anne's son Isaac died in 1872 at the age of 13 and is buried in Strathroy Municipal Cemetery where some of Anne's relations are also buried.

In 1881 Anne is still living with sons James and John and a 5 year old child by the name of Ida May Graham. In 1891 she can be seen living in Metcalfe, Middlesex West, Ontario, with her son John. Ida May Graham (15), still with the family, has been joined by Charles Graham (17) and a Joseph Parry (17).

Charles Graham's father was born in Scotland but his mother was born in Ireland. Could these Graham children be the offspring of a daughter of Ann?

Unfortunately, Ann's son John, a farmer, died March 26, 1892, from an accident which fractured the base of his skull. The informant was his brother James.

By 1900 Ann is living with her daughter Elizabeth Hunt and her family in Brown, Manistee, Michigan. Also, in the same town, is her son James. He was to die in 1904 when a tree fell on his head. He is buried with his brothers John and Isaac in Strathroy Municipal Cemetery, Middlesex, Ontario. Children Ann and Joseph have disappeared. Perhaps they got married and moved elsewhere? Ann may be buried in Brown Township, Manatee, Michigan.
