Biography

James Bliven, born in 1643 in England, was the possible father (uncle, or elder brother) of Edward Bliven. [1] [2] James was one of three brothers - the other two being Joshua and Edward - who immigrated from England and arrived in Salem, Massachusetts before 1650. [3]

Bridget Oliver is currently attached to this profile as James Bliven's wife. However, Robert Blevins wrote about Bridget Oliver in one of his reports in The Blevins Men of New England and New York, such as this one, on page 8, that she did not marry James Blevin. [4] Supposed son Edward is described on page 16 of the same work: there is no mention of Bridget as his mother (nor for that matter that Edward was son of James...). [5]

Edward of Westerly's father, born 1643 in England and coming to Salem area in 1664, this could be James, that bought land from the Indians at Oyster Bay, L.I. in 1672. (The reason I picked James was the naming pattern of the children. If Henry was Edwards father, then at least one of his three sons would have been names Henry. The 1st son named after himself, 2th son is James - after his father, 3rd son, John - after Isabel's father.)"

  3. Earl Crandall, Descendants of Edward Bliven, page 1. Cited at Edward Bliven Text: "The immigrant Bliven ancestors were three brothers: Joshua, James and Edward Bliven, all coming from England and arriving in Salem, Massachusetts before 1650. According to this account, James remained in Salem, Edward's whereabouts are not mentioned, and Joshua is reported as being in Newport by 1669, and it mentions that his sons, James and Edward, both settled in Westerly, RI. This history of the Bliven family is, unfortunately, not documented, yet has been copied by many genealogists since 1908 and perpetrated as truth. There is, however, no proof for this origin of the Bliven family. Therefore, this lineage begins with Edward-1 Bliven of Westerly, RI."

What is the evidence for his marriage to a Bridget Oliver, please?
posted by Jillaine Smith
I have no evidence. Bridget Oliver's profile is managed by someone else; I do not remember when and how her profile was attached as wife to James Bliven's profile. She is not mentioned in this biography, nor in probable son Edward's biography..
And Robert Blevins wrote about her in one of his reports. This one, page 8-- she did not marry James Blevin:

Edward is described on page 16. No mention of Bridget as his mother. (Nor for that matter that Edward was son of James...)
