Henry was born from humble origins in the North Norfolk seaside town of Cromer in 1876^[1][2] and was baptised on 2 April 1876 in Cromer, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom.^[3] Henry would go on to become the most decorated lifeboatman in RNLI history.

He was raised in Cromer by his mother Ellen (Blogg) Davies and stepfather John James Davies, who was a second coxswain and fisherman. He left school at 11 to work on the family crab boat, although he never in his life learned to swim.

At 18, he joined the Cromer lifeboat crew.

"Henry joined the crew in 1894 and won the vote to become their coxswain 15 years later. He was coxswain for 38 years, until he retired in 1947.
